I had the opportunity to explore a few countries throughout central america when I was on a mission trip through one of local churces in Philadelphia. Our mission was to assist a family build out their home on the western side of Belize. I decided to take a few weeks prior to the work to visit Panama and spend some time with my good friend and his family for the holidays in Guatamala.
Once I arrived in Panama, I was initially surprised by the level of humidity. I guess I should have assumed it given the proximity to the equater, but it has this level of thickness that just seeps into you. It's part of the reason why you will see a number of expats located in the mountains of the country Boquete. Panama City is a vibrant city that connects the south and north parts of the americas. I was also surprised at the number of south americans coming up into Panam for job opportunities. Looking back, it makes sense, but it doesn't hit you until you're in country. I had a chance to witness a ship coming through the Panama Canal, which I actually a pretty impressive site to be seen!
My highlights would be the islands of Bocas del Toro, with plenty of opportunity to explore any kind of water-sport you can think of along with beautiful white sand beaches. Boquete was likely my favorite, with the scenic highlands and cloud forests. There are plenty of coffee spots to keep you going.
Guatamala is my favorite central american country, given its rich culture, volcanoes, rainforests, and ancient Mayan sites. I had the chance to spend Christmas and New Years with my close friend and his family in Gautemala City. It was unlike anything I had experienced in the past, folks were out until 4am celebrating with explosions all over the city, dancing, dining late into the evening. An absolute wonderous experience of community comming together to celebrate life.
I entered Belize from the western border after my stay at the ancient Mayan sites. I was blessed to have the opportunity to build a home for a young family in a remote western part of Belize. We had the chance to enjoy the eastern side of the country, taking the opportunity to rest and unwind before we head back. I'm always amazed at what we can do as a community when we come together and help each other out. Life is difficult, there's plenty of help to be received and given. This was my chance to give.
